Hangzhou Winland Center, a stone’s throw from the Grand Canal, UNESCO World Heritage site, is a mixed-use project consisting of offices, retail and residential towers weaved together with the surrounding by a walkable network. The formality of the masterplan pays tribute to the adjacent magnificent Xiangji Temple. Setting back the towers by 30m with a row of gallery villas of sympathetic scale preserves a clear skyline for the heritage cluster. With reference to the traditional Chinese triple-courtyard layout, strong symmetry informed a series of legible spaces and architectural language.
